General information about mockups

Large assemblies may contain tens to hundreds of thousands of components. Large number of components increases the duration of the opening, rebuilding and saving the assembly, as well as performing various operations in it.

One of the ways to increase the speed of working with an assembly is to replace its subassembly components with mockups.

A mockup is a model (a part or an assembly) designed for geometric representation of any component in the assembly. A mockup contains the minimum number of geometric objects, sufficient to form the appearance of the assembly, position its components, and create associative views. The mockup is stored in a separate file, the mockup file.

When a component is replaced by a mockup, the geometry of the component (geometric objects, detailing elements, components) is replaced by the geometry contained in the mockup file. The component properties (mass properties, name, designation, etc.) do not change. So, a mockup component is a component whose geometry is obtained from the mockup file, and the properties are obtained from the source component file.

Using mockups allows you to reduce the amount of data contained in the assembly, by reducing the number of solids, faces, edges and other geometric objects included in its subassembly components.

Mockups are usually used to replace "heavy" subassembly components containing large numbers of their own components. Replacing such components with mockups allows you to increase the speed of work with the assembly.

The most efficient is to replace with mockups those subassemblies which make up a geometrically simple case with components located inside. For example, an equipment cabinet, a gearbox, etc.

If the component replaced with a mockup was created in version KOMPAS-3D 17.1 or older, it is recommended to save it in the current version KOMPAS-3D. This will increase the speed of work with a mockup component since in KOMPAS-3D v18 the structure of the model file has been optimized for faster data retrieval.

If necessary, you can replace with mockups not only subassemblies, but also other components of the assembly, except for library components and local parts.

Working with a mockup component is generally similar to working with a regular assembly component. You can perform various operations on mockup components, overlay matings on them, etc. Specifics of the use of mockup component is described in the Working with mockups in the assembly.

Detailing components are displayed in the Design Tree under the Components section and are marked with a special icon . The composition of a mockup component in the Tree is not shown.

In some cases, for a simplified representation of the component model in an assembly, you can use Variants of geometric representation.
