JT is the standard format for visualizing and exchanging data between various CAD systems. JT format was developed and is maintained by Siemens PLM Software.

In 2012, this format was adopted by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) as the international standard IS 14306-1. Thus, the JT format has become the world’s first internationally recognized ISO standard for the lightweight representation of 3D data. This format eliminates the dependence of manufacturers on proprietary data formats, expands the scope of application of three-dimensional visualization tools and simplifies team work at all stages of the product life cycle. Using the JT format, you can transfer not only 3D geometry, but also attributes and PMI data.

The JT format allows saving product data with different levels of detail: from simple geometry and size to complex descriptions of the product structure, including the frame (faceted) representation, lighting models, textures, accurate geometry representation in the form of non-uniform rational B-splines (NURBS), structure of the product, attributes (color, layer, font), and information for the product manufacturing.

The peculiar feature of this format is the ability to create "lightweight" files through the faceted representation of models.

JT files are mainly used for the following tasks:

Creating "lightweight" files for models visualization. These files mainly use polygonal (triangulation) data with a high degree of compression.

Creating "detailed" files for the exchange of models between CAD-applications.
