With KOMPAS-3D, you can import the formats supported by AutoCAD (binary DWG and text DXF), and export native graphic documents to these formats. This way, different companies and organization units with different CAD systems may exchange information.
The DXF format (Data eXchange Format) developed by Autodesk for their software products, including AutoCAD; has become a "de facto" standard for CAD systems and is supported by all developers of CAD software. A DXF file may have been created not only in AutoCAD but also in other graphic software. |
When converting, please note that objects with similar appearance and similar purpose may have different internal structure and parameters in different software. When you try to transmit information from one graphic system to another (when converting files from one format to another), it may so happen that the target format wouldn't support the objects or object parameters of the source format. Sometimes, you can convert these objects into similar objects of the target format to keep their appearance intact. For example, the dimension tolerance on KOMPAS-3D is included into the main dimension text. After conversion, the contents of the tolerance remains intact but the text is converted to "Text After".
It is not permitted to convert the same document to another format and back several times, because we cannot guarantee the resulting document to be correct due do differences between the graphical systems. In some cases it wouldn't be possible to convert the document again. |
If you cannot apply the aforementioned conversion method, then the objects should be split into graphic primitives (segments, curves, texts); after the conversion to the new format, these primitives are merged into a composite object (block in AutoCAD). As a result, the source object loses all information about its type (and therefore it cannot be edited appropriately in a way specifically dedicated for this type) but its outline is preserved. The following KOMPAS-3D objects are exported to the AutoCAD format this way: designations of surface finishes, datum and tolerance, inserted fragments, technical specifications, tables, equidistant line.
Please note that due to these reasons it isn't possible to make the resulting files absolutely identical to source files considering both the appearance and the internal properties of source and target objects. Due to format differences, it is not possible to make the properties of some converted objects similar to the properties of the source objects. The external appearance of the converted objects, however, can be easily customized. That's why the resulting image of an import or export may be almost identical to the source (or to what you need).
In addition to the internal structure of objects in different systems, the logic of operation may also be different. If you try to edit objects in a converted document, these document may become visually different from the objects of the source document while their type will remain the same. For example, in an AutoCAD document converted from KOMPAS, a rotation may look similar to the original one, but after editing the dimensional arrows may become rotates (they would be placed "outside" instead of "inside"). The reason is difference between rules of arrow autoplacement in KOMPAS-3D and in AutoCAD. |
