Revolution surface is created by rotating a section around its axis to the specified angle in one direction or in both directions.
As a section you can use faces, sketches (areas in sketches), edges, 3D curves (including contours).
Sectional objects can be closed and open, planar and non-planar.
By rotating flat closed sections as well as faces it is possible to create a closed surface. The figure below shows the creation of a rotation surface which section is a face.

b) closed surface, c) open surface.
For some sections it is not possible to construct a closed surface, for example, if the section is a non-planar curve or an edge. An example of rotation of a non-planar curve is shown in the figure.

If the section is an open sketch or an open contour plotted by the sketch or on a planar face, and the axis of rotation is in the plane of section, then you can select the plotting type: toroid or spheroid, see the figure.
