Component is a model object represented by another model stored in a separate file. Components may be parts, assemblies, stock products and library elements. A special type of the component is a local part. A local part does not have a separate file representation, but is stored directly in its model. Components, in their turn, may include other components, etc.

The same component may be inserted in different models. It is possible to reinsert a component that already exists in the model.

In a model that contains components, you can perform operations that simulate processing of the product assembly, for example, you can construct a hole that passes through several components. The result of these operations is not transferred to the component files.

Components can be mated with each other. There are two types of matings:

positioning matings fix one object relative to another in a certain way,

mechanical connection matings determine the law of movement of one object relative to another.

For details about adding components to the model and overlaying mating on them, see section Components.
