To perform adjustment for the specified surface area of polygonal object, It is required to specify the type of the resulting surface that fits into this area.

To select the required type of resulting surface, use the Surface type list on the Parameter panel.

By default, the Auto determination line is active in the list. In this case, after specifying the area for approximation, the surface type that will best fit into the specified area (i.e. will allow obtaining the highest approximation accuracy) is automatically selected. The corresponding line is activated in the Surface type list.

The parameters of the selected surface type are determined by the system in such a way as to minimize the deviation of the resulting surface from the original data. The accuracy of the approximation for a given area can be viewed in the Result reference field group (the smaller the deviation values, the higher the accuracy).

If necessary, you can manually select the surface type from the list. The system will calculate the parameters for the selected surface. Manual selection is possible both before the automatic detection of the surface type (i.e. before specifying the area for approximation) and after.

If Auto determination is subsequently set in the list again, the surface type changes to one automatically selected by the system, and the surface parameters are recalculated.

A spline surface can only be selected manually; auto determination of this type of surface is not possible.

When the resulting surface type is set, a phantom of it appears in the graphic area.

If you need to change the surface type or the area specified for approximation, keep the following in mind.

If additional parameters are specified for the surface type selected (for example, a guide object is specified), then when switching from an automatically determined type to a manually determined type, these parameters are saved, and when switching back (to auto determination), the parameters are reset. Only the specified set of triangles is saved.

If after setting the resulting surface type (automatically or manually) the approximated area is re-specified, the surface type remains the same, and its parameters are recalculated for the new set of triangles. If you want the system to automatically determine the surface type again, select the Auto determination line from the list. You can also manually change the surface type

If the calculation of the parameters for the selected surface type results in data that contradict the mathematical representation of this surface (for example, the resulting surface has dimensions close to the limit), then the phantom does not appear, and the Result reference fields remain empty. A message is displayed on the screen stating that this surface type is not suitable for performing the operation.
