Segmentation of a polygonal object |
Scroll |
Segmentation of a polygonal object involves dividing the surface of the polygonal object into segments — connected sets of triangles characterized by relatively constant curvature at the vertices or by a constant angle between adjacent triangles.
Segmentation allows you to identify areas within a polygonal object that are similar in shape to analytical surfaces — a plane, cylinder, sphere, cone, or torus — and use them when working further with the polygonal object, for example, to create surfaces using the Surface adjustment
command.
There are two segmentation methods available: By Curvature and By Angle.
The By Curvature method yields the best results when segmenting polygonal objects obtained from scanning. The mesh of such objects features smooth transitions between triangles.

Segmenting a polygonal object using the By Curvature method:
a) original view of the object, b) segmentation result
The By angle method should be used when segmenting polygonal objects created in CAD systems. In such cases, the transitions between the mesh triangles are not smoothed, and surface areas of different types have distinct boundaries.

Segmenting a polygonal object using the By Angle method:
a) original view of the object, b) segmentation result
The result of segmentation is a polygonal object with a relief
which surface is divided into segments. In this process, either the original object can be segmented or a new one can be created.
The resulting segments are colored with different colors, which are assigned by the system in a random order.

The segmentation operation does not appear in the Construction Tree, so the parameters of the completed segmentation cannot be edited. If the result does not meet your requirements, you can resegment the surface of the polygonal object. |
|
The presence of segments makes a polygonal object more «difficult». This requires additional computer resources and may slow down system performance when working with an object whose mesh consists of a large number of triangles. If your hardware does not allow you to work comfortably with a segmented object, you should abandon segmentation and use the object in its original form. |
