Segmenting a Polygonal Object: Overview
The command used for segmentation is Segmentation of a polygonal object
.
Procedure
1.Select a polygonal object in the graphics area or in the Design Tree whose surface you want to divide into segments.
You can select polygonal objects with or without topology, created by any method.
|
A polygonal object generated by the command Convert to a polygonal object To perform segmentation, you must first explode the transaction that created the object. |
The name of the selected polygon object is displayed in the Object field.
2.If you want to keep the selected polygon object unchanged and perform the segmentation on a copy of it, select the Create New Object option.
3.After segmentation is complete, the original polygonal object will be hidden. A similar polygonal object will appear in the model, with its surface divided into segments.
When this option is disabled, the surface of the original polygonal object is segmented.
4.Select a segmentation method using the By Curvature or By Angle radio button, and set the parameters for the selected method.
•By curvature
In the Sensitivity field, enter a sensitivity threshold for the curvature at the vertices of the triangles ranging from 0.001 to 100 (%).
If you want to automatically select the appropriate sensitivity setting, click the Adjust to optimal value button
to the right of the field Sensitivity. The button appears when a polygonal object is selected.
After clicking the button, a value appears in the field that is calculated by the system based on the terrain features most commonly found on the surface of the selected polygonal object.
|
If a polygonal object consists of only a small number of triangles, or if the curvature at the vertices of the triangles is uniform or too small, it is not possible to perform segmentation using the By Curvature method. It is also not possible to automatically select the optimal sensitivity value. |
•By angle
Enter the threshold value for the angle between adjacent triangles in the Angle field. The value is specified in degrees.
4.The polygonal object is segmented with optimized segment diensions —the "Optimize dimension" switch is set to position I (on).
Optimization prevents the creation of small segments for surface areas containing outliers—triangle vertices whose deviations exceed a specified value. Such local defects may be present in polygonal objects obtained by scanning.
The "Minimum Allowable dimension" field contains the default value for the minimum size of the segments being created. Change the value in this field if necessary. During optimization, segments smaller than the specified size will be merged with adjacent segments.
In rare cases, you may need to disable optimization. To do this, set the Optimize dimension switch to 0 (disabled).
5.
To confirm the segmentation, click the Create Object button.
Each surface segment is colored a different color.
If a polygonal object without topology was segmented, it is converted into a polygonal object with topology, and then its surface is divided into segments.
6.
To finish the task, click the Finish button.
