The method for constructing the average surface is selected using the Method button group. The following options are available:

By center cloud,

By equidistant pairs.

A description of the construction methods is provided below.

By center cloud

This method works as follows. An array of points is generated on the base surface. For each point in the array, the center of a sphere with the minimum radius is determined; this sphere is located between the initial surfaces and touches both the base surface at that point and the corresponding surface. The average surface is constructed using the obtained sphere centers.

The base surface is defined as a set of initial faces on which the algorithm for calculating the average surface performs the initial subdivision. The other initial surface is the reference surface.
The Direction of calculation button group is used to select the base surface:

From surface 1 — the first set of faces is the base,

From surface 2 — the second set of faces is the base.

If the source surface consists of multiple faces that meet smoothly or tangentially, that group is treated as a single object. In all other cases, the faces are treated as separate objects. Thus, groups consisting of one or more faces are formed in each source set. These groups are divided into pairs: each group from one set is matched with each group from the other set. The average surface is calculated for all possible pairs. The list of resulting pairs is displayed in the Pair list field on the Parameter Panel. When a row in the list is selected, the corresponding faces are highlighted in the graphics area. If construction is not required for a particular pair, disable the option next to its number in the list.

For any pair, there may be four options for constructing the average surface. Each option corresponds to a specific combination of normal directions to the faces. You can select the desired option using the buttons Previous result and Next result in the group Select result. The button group appears on the Options Panel if, in the Pair list . When you click the buttons in this group, the graphical area will display, in turn, the options for constructing the average surface for the selected pair.

The average surface can be constructed taking into account the boundaries of the corresponding source face (faces) or using the theoretical surface of the face. The desired option is selected using the Consider borders option.

•If this option is enabled, only points within the corresponding source face (or faces) are used in the calculation.

•If this option is disabled, points on the theoretical surface of the face may be used. If necessary, the theoretical surface of the face is extended.

By equidistant pairs

This method allows one to construct a mean surface that is equidistant from the original surfaces. It is appropriate to use this method if the faces of the first original surface include faces that are equidistant from the faces of the second original surface. In this case, an average surface is constructed that is equidistant from the faces of each such pair. The remaining selected faces are not taken into account.

There may be several options for constructing the average surface. You can select the desired option using the Previous Result and Next Result buttons in the Result selection group. When you click the buttons in this group, the options for constructing the average surface will be displayed one after another in the graphics area.
