Often standards prescribe grouping section objects into sets by categories, and sorting within the resulting sets by name or designation. This mechanism is also supported by KOMPAS–3D system BOM.

Sets of objects within sections are called sub-sections.

Subsections, like sections, are components of the BOM style. Their number, names and order inside each section are set in the style setting (but can be changed when Settings of the already created BOM).

By choosing the style of the current BOM, you thereby choose the lists of possible subsections of the BOM sections among other settings and parameters.

An example of applying subdivisions can be the List of Referenced Documents, where in each section, documents need to be grouped into sets in the following sequence:

Standards,

TS for purchased products and materials,

Technical guidelines,

Instructions.

If splitting into subsections is enabled for a section, the objects in the section will first be divided into subsections (i.e., grouped with the same subsection number), and then within the subsections, they will be arranged according to the sorting rules established for the section.

When entering a BOM item, you can Select the existing subsection from the list (if it was generated when configuring the section) or create a new one by specifying its number. In the latter case, you can only specify a number for a new subsection, but not a name.

You can enter items in arbitrary order by pointing out the subsections to which they belong. The BOM will place items, taking into account the order of subsections.

An item can be moved from one subsection to another, i.e. the number of subsection will be changed.

Names of subsections are not displayed in the BOM form. They serve only for the convenience of selecting a subsection.

If you want to separate sets of objects from each other, use Auxiliary BOM Items.

However, if you deactivate subsections when configuring the section, the objects in the section are sorted by designation or name without first grouping them into subsections. The subsection numbers of the objects, if maintained, remain. If further subsections are switched on, the objects will be rearranged according to their subsection numbers.
