A backup file is created when saving an edited KOMPAS document and contains the previous revision of this document, i.e. the document in the form in which it was before editing. If a document is saved for the first time, then a backup file is not created.
When setting up KOMPAS-3D (see section Backup copy), saving of previous copies of documents can be enabled or disabled. If saving previous copies is enabled, they can be placed in one folder with documents or in a different folder.
Saving a document is performed in the following order: after invoking the File – Save command, first is saved the previous version of document as a backup file, then a new version is written into the document file.
•If saving of previous copies is disabled, then upon termination of document saving the backup file is deleted. In case of an emergency termination of KOMPAS-3D during document saving, the backup file remains. It is located in the same folder as the document. The backup file name is formed as per the following template: <document file name> + <.> + <name extension> + <.> + <bak> (for example, example.frw.bak).
•If saving previous copies is enabled, then
•if a copy is placed into a folder with the document, the backup file name is formed as per the above template,
•if a copy is placed in another folder, the backup filename and extension coincide with the name and extension of the document file.
Therefore, if documents are lost, or if during saving a document the running of KOMPAS-3D completes abruptly, then information can be partially restored from backup files. The details of opening backup files with the bak extension are explained in the section. Recovery of documents from backup files.
