A document or object may contain texts in various languages. The language is one of the text properties. A language attribute can be assigned to the text during input or editing. To write specific terms, for example, abbreviations made up of Latin characters, the selection of a particular language as an attribute is not crucial — what matters is that the required symbols are available in the font being used. But to perform spellcheck of words, explanations, and texts the assignment of a language attribute allows to use a dictionary of that language.

For more details on checking texts in various languages, see the section Checking text in different languages.
