Surface by point layer is a spline surface or faceted surface plotted by points that form a layer in space, i.e. are arranged so that the height of their bounding box is small compared to its length and width.

When you run the Surface by point layer operation, the software interprets a point layer as a grid of points and creates a surface based on this grid. Hence, when plotting a spline surface, you can use this command as an equivalent of the Surface by point grid.

The result of the operation Surface by point layer is better if the layer points form a regular grid with quadrangular cells.
