For measuring the deviation of distances between two objects, use the Mutual deviation command. The objects can be two curves, two surfaces, or a curve and a surface.

Measurements are performed between the points of the first object and their projections on the second object in a given direction. The number of points is determined by the user, their location on the object is set automatically. The direction of measurement depends on the measurement method.

If the objects of measurement are the edge of a face and another face, then the following angles between tangent planes to the faces at measurement points.

Step-by-step instructions

1.In the model graphic area, specify the first object — a curve or a surface — from which the measurements will be taken. The name of the object will appear in the Object 1 field.

2.Specify the second object. The name of the object will appear in the Object 2 field.

It's available to change the order of selected objects by clicking Swap to the right of the fields. After this, the names of the objects in the Object 1 and Object 2 fields will be swapped.
The button is not available if the objects specified are a curve and a surface. In this case, deviation measurement is always applied between the points of the curve and their projections on the surface.

3.Specify the measurement method of deviation by clicking the appropriate button in the Method group (see table).
The group of buttons is missing from the Parameter panel if two curves are specified as objects for measurements. In this case, the measurement is performed Normal to object.

The measurement is performed as follows:

if two curves or a curve and a face are selected as objects, using the specified number of points on Object 1 (see below);the points are distributed with uniform step by parameter of the curve,

if two faces are selected as objects, using a grid created on Object 1, the density of which nodes is determined by the number of points based on the U and V parameters of the face surface (see below).

The grid points or nodes are projected onto Object 2. For the Normal to object method the measurement is performed along the normal, for the method By direction  — in the direction specified by the guide object.

4.If the Direction measurement method is selected, select a guide object and specify the measurement direction. The name of the selected object will appear in the Guide object field.

If the measurement needs to be performed in one direction, set the switch In both directions to the 0 (off) position and specify the measurement direction – direct or reverse, by setting the switch Forward/Reverse to the required position.

If the measurement needs to be performed in two directions, set the In both directions on-off switch to I (enabled).

The measurement direction in the graphic area is displayed as a phantom. It should coincide with the direction to the surface (if the objects are a curve and a surface) or the second surface (if the objects are two surfaces), otherwise the measurement will not be performed.

If to set a wrong measurement direction, then during the attempt to run a command, there will be a message The calculation didn't produce the result in the chosen direction.

5.Set number of points:

The number of points in the U and V directions in the fields By U and By Vif the measurement objects are two surfaces,

The number of points along the curve in the field Number of points if the objects are two curves or a curve and a surface.

The default value for the field is 20.

6.In the Minima and Maximums fields set the number of the first sought lows and highs of the measured values.

The default value for the field is 1.

7.In the Information format section, set the accuracy for the displayed calculation results and length units. Details...

8.Launch the measurement process by clicking the link Run check in the table header Results on the Parameters panel.

During the measurement process, a progress bar is displayed on the screen showing the degree of its completion. Measurement can be stopped by clicking Cancel on the indicator panel or the Stop link in the Results table header.

After performing the measurements, lines connecting the measurement points of the first required minimums and maximums will be shown in the graphic area of the model, as well as the measurement line of the absolute minimum. The measurement lines of the first sought lows are shown as solid lines, the first sought highs are dotted. Next to each line, the type of deviation and the measured distance are displayed.

9.To save the measurement (selected objects and measurement parameters will be saved), click Save in the title of the Parameters panel.

After saving the measurement in the Model tree, under the subsection Deviation analysis of the Diagnostics section, an object with the corresponding icon will appear.

The command is not completed after the measurement results are saved. If required, you can change the measurement parameters. If measurement conditions change, a Recalculate link appears in the Results table header, allowing you to calculate the result again.

10.To complete operation of the command, click Finish .

Measuring the angle between tangent planes to the faces at measurement points

When a deviation is measured between the edge of a face and another face, the angles between the tangent planes to the faces are calculated at the measurement points. This can be useful, for example, when assessing the deviation from tangency between faces sharing a common edge.

If an edge belongs to two faces, then the measurement result depends on which of them is selected (enters the recorder) as the face containing the edge. To select the desired edge, use objects selection when specifying an edge.

Measurement results are displayed in the Information Window. To open the window, click the Show button in the information window,located above the Results table on the Parameters panel.

The minimum and maximum angle values ​​at measurement points are designated as A_min and A_max, respectively. If the command is run with the full set of measurement results displayed (the Briefly option is disabled in the Information Format section), the angle values ​​will be displayed for all measurement points.
