KOMPAS-3D provides three ways to insert views and fragments into another document. These methods are shown in the table.

An insertion is a separate object displayed in the Document tree and selected in the document as a single entity. The contents of the insertion is copied into the document and is stored there as a single entity. The association with the source file is not preserved except for its name and full path. If a document with embedded insertions is moved to another workplace, you don't have to move the source files with it. You can edit embedded fragments (but not views) inside the documents. The changes will be propagated to all the insertions of this fragment within the master document but not to the source fragment. |

A referent to the source file is generated in the master document without inserting the objects. When the source file is edited, all the insertions of this source are updated. This method of insertion is recommended when the source image is used in several documents, and you want these documents to be updated automatically each time when the source image is modified. This way you won't have to modify each document individually when a common detail or node is modified. The master document is updated when it is activated or opened. When a document with external references is moved to another workplace, the source files of the references have to be moved there, too. The objects in the fragment or in the view are copied into the document; all associations between these objects and the source file are lost. The insertion is not displayed in the Document tree. |

If the sources of insertions made by references are located in other workplaces, please make sure the File Modification Management is enabled in the file access rights dialog. This way, if the insertion source is modified, a message will be displayed when working with the master document. To open the file access rights dialog, please select Configuration — Parameters... — System — Files — Access Rights Setup . |
