Direction of grid axes

Scroll

When constructing an array by grid you can specify direction for each of grid axes.

Grid formation schema...

Default axes direction

By default grid axes are located at 90° angle to each other.

Default direction of the first axis is defined in the following way.

When copying objects of all types except operations, the direction of the first axis coincides with the X-axis of the current coordinate system (for selecting the current coordinate system, see section). Current Coordinate System. Selection of the Current Coordinate System).

When copying an operation, the direction of the first axis coincides with the X axis of the sketch of this operation.

When copying extrusion or revolution operations which use not sketch but other objects (e. g. face) as a section, then direction of the first grid axis is the same as axis X of absolute coordinate system.

When multiple operations are selected for copying, the direction of first grid axis is set by X axis of the sketch or by X axis absolute coordinate system of the first operation selected.

Methods of setting direction

The elements for specifying the direction are located in the Array Parameters section of the Parameters Panel: for the first axis — in the Direction 1 group, and for the second axis — in the Direction 2 group.

You can specify direction of any of grid axes in the following ways.

Activate the Guiding object field for the axis being configured and specify the relevant object in Design Tree or in the graphic region of the model. Name of the selected object appears in the field.

Following objects may be used as a guide object:

straight-line object – grid axis is directed along a line parallel to the object,

planar object – grid axis is directed along a line perpendicular to the object,

cylindrical or taper surface – grid axis is directed along a line parallel to axis of rotation.

Straight-line and planar objects are listed in table Model object types.

Build a vector by pressing the Create Vector  button to the right of the Guiding Object field. More details about vector construction...

The direction set by a guiding object or a vector can be changed to the opposite direction by pressing the Change Direction button, located to the right of the Distance 1/Distance 2 field.

Set an angle:

for the first axis – axis inclination angle relative to its default position; enter the value in the Slope field;

for the second axis – the angle between grid axes; enter the value in the Aperture Angle field.

If axis direction is set by a guiding object or a vector, then angle entry is unavailable.
