Setting the plane for sketch construction

The sketch of the operation can be constructed on an auxiliary or coordinate plane, on a planar face of the model, as well as on a phantom plane perpendicular to the selected curve. The procedure of working with the model does not depend on the plane on which the sketch is constructed.

Setting the plane for constructing the sketch is performed in sketch placement process.

While working with a model, you can move the sketch to another plane; however, if the sketch contains projections of other objects, and If the sketch-based operation serves as the foundation for other operations, changing the sketch plane might result in errors in the model.

The plane on which the sketch of the first solid or surface is located, determines the position of the object in standard orientations: front, top, left, etc. In KOMPAS-3D, several axonometric schemes are available, differing by the positions of the model in standard orientations. If none of the predefined schemes provides the desired position of the model, this does not mean that the sketch of the first solid or surface needs to be transferred to another plane or rotated. You can create your own axonometric scheme in the View Orientation process.

Sketch plane orientation and sketch display scale

By default, the system is configured so that when you enter the Sketch mode A minimal rotation of the model occurs, in which the plane of the sketch becomes parallel to the screen, and on exiting the sketch mode, the model returns to the former position.

The default sketch display scale is defined as follows:

when creating a new sketch:

If the sketch is constructed on the coordinate plane, the scale is assumed to be equal to 1.

If the sketch is constructed on an auxiliary plane or a planar face, the scale is selected based on the object's size.

When editing an existing sketch, the scale will be adjusted to the image size in the sketch, i.e., the Display sketch in full command will be executed automatically.

The settings for automatic orientation and scale can be changed in the dialog for changing orientation settings.

If the automatic rotation of the model is disabled or if the position of the model was changed manually when creating a sketch, then you can place the sketch plane parallel to the screen using the Normal to... command. This command can be called from the context menu (if no other command is active) or by using the corresponding button on the Quick Access Toolbar.

After calling the Normal to... command the sketch plane becomes parallel to the screen. If the command is called once again, the sketch plane will be rotated with its reverse side to the observer.
