Creation of lists and management thereof

There are two methods for generation of lists:

numbering of existing paragraphs;

paragraph numbering at input.

The first method is more visual, so we first consider formation of a list from the existing text. Numbering does not change either borders of paragraphs nor the method of their alignment, nor other parameters. Therefore, to improve the perception of list, the document can be preliminarily formatted (see sections Selection of font and setting its parameters, Change of paragraph properties, Text styles).

To transform several existing paragraphs into a list, do the following actions.

1.Select the paragraphs which need to be numbered.

2.Run the command Numbering .

The paragraph sequence number will appear at the beginning of each paragraph, i.e. paragraphs will turn into list items.

The list generated in this way has no nested structure, i.e. all the list items belong to the same (first) level (Fig. Lists, a).

If necessary, you can move some paragraphs to the next level, i.e. increase the numbering level of some list items by one (Fig. Lists, b).

To do this, select the required paragraphs and run the command Increase numbering level .

Numbering of the list will change as appropriate.

To perform a reverse operation, i.e. decrease the existing numbering level of paragraphs, select them and run the Decrease numbering level .

To generate a list on input of paragraphs, do the following operations.

1.Enter a paragraph which is the first list item.

2.Fetch the Numbering command. At the paragraph start, the digit 1 will appear.

3.Place the cursor at the last position of the numbered paragraph and press the <Enter>key. A new paragraph with the next number – 2– will be created.

4.To increase or deduce the numbering Level of the current paragraph, fetch the Increase Numbering Level or Decrease Numbering Level command, respectively.

5.Enter the required number of list items positioning them at the required levels.

To cancel numbering of the current paragraph (for example, to complete input of the list) or selected paragraphs (for example, to transform the list into a regular text), fetch the Numbering command again.

Quite often, in one document (or caption on a drawing) it is required to create several independent lists. To start numbering from beginning, i.e. from the first level and from the first number, do the following.

1.Place the cursor into the paragraph which is the first item of a new list.

2.Run the Start numbering from beginning .

Action of this command applies only to the current paragraph, therefore it is available if there are no selected paragraphs.
