General information about sets. Creating a set

Reference objects for various operations can consist of multiple curves, edges, and faces. You can select either individual objects or sets of objects that meet specific criteria.

In KOMPAS-3D, you can create sets of faces, curves, and edges.

If a condition is set on the Quick Access Toolbar that selects a group of objects rather than a single object, selecting an object in the drawing area will automatically select all objects that meet the specified condition and fall within the aplication area. Thus, to select a chain of tangent curves, the following condition Tangent curves and edges is set: , To select all faces created by a single operation, the condition is Operation faces etc.

The selected objects are grouped into a set. The number of objects is shown in parentheses in the set’s name: for a set of faces, this is the number of faces, and for a set of curves and edges, it is the number of chain segments. A link can be an edge, a segment of a multi-segment curve, an entire single-segment curve, or a portion of a curve if the curves are selected while the button is held down Select parts of curves.

If an object is specified while the "Group" selection condition is enabled, the set is created even if there are no objects in the model that meet the selected condition. In this case, the set includes only the specified object. If matching objects appear in the model later, they will be automatically added to the set.

To select a single object rather than a group of objects (regardless of how it is related to other objects), specify that object with the condition set to Single curves and edges or Single face. In this case, the set is not created.

Features of set formation

As you continue working with the model, the dataset is updated to reflect the changes made to the model. Learn more about the set update...

Multiple sets and individual objects can be selected to define the reference object for an operation. If any of the selected objects or sets are deleted, the deleted objects are added to the list of limiting objects for the remaining sets. This ensures that the composition of the remaining sets is updated correctly.

A set containing boundary objects is denoted by the symbol «*».

If necessary, you can edit the list of limiting objects—remove unnecessary restrictions or add objects that you want to exclude from the set. This and other actions to modify the set’s parameters are performed in during the set editing subprocess.

Contents of the set. Initiating object

The set includes:

•initiating object — an object directly specified by the user,

•items selected automatically along with the specified one

The exception is a set of faces generated by the condition Adjacent to selected face . In this case, the initiating face is not included in the set.

If there are no objects in the model that satisfy the specified condition, then the set consists only of the initiating object.

In general, the chain of objects in a set is constructed starting from the initiating object. If the initiating object of the set is removed during further work with the model, another object from the same set becomes the initiating object.

If necessary, you can change the initiating object when editing the set. Learn more about changing the initiating object...

Application area of the set. Update to the set's contents

The application area consists of a group of objects that are checked for compliance with a specified condition at the time the set is created and during subsequent work with the model; that is, the set may only contain primitives (faces and edges) of objects that fall within the application area.

The application area is determined by the system and cannot be changed by the user.

In an assembly model, a set’s scope of application includes only objects that belong to the same component; in other words, a set cannot contain objects that belong to different components.

When working with the model, the system tracks changes to objects within the scope of the set, and the composition of the set is updated. If any of the objects in the set cease to satisfy the initial condition, they will be excluded from the set; conversely, if, as a result of the changes made, the condition for objects within the scope begins to be satisfied, they will be added to the set. When updating the set, only those changes that are in Design history tree are located above the operation whose reference object is the set.

The composition of the set also changes if objects within it are deleted.

When the composition of the set changes, the model geometry is rebuilt.

Features of set formation

When specifying curves, edges, or faces, keep the following in mind:

•If certain curves or edges that meet a specified condition have already been selected, they are not included in the selection when selecting other curves or edges that meet the same condition. For example, one of the links in a chain is selected under the condition Single curves and edges . Next, the Tangent Curves and Edges condition is set and another link in the same chain is selected. The remaining links in the chain are selected and grouped together, while the link that was selected earlier remains a separately selected object.

•If some faces that meet a given condition have already been selected, they are not included in the set when selecting the remaining faces that satisfy the same condition. For example, one of the faces of the solid is selected if the condition Single face . Next, the Body/Surface Edge condition is set and one of the body's faces that has not yet been selected is specified. All of the body's remaining faces are selected and combined into a set, while the face that was selected earlier remains a separately selected object.

•If selecting all objects that satisfy the condition results in the operation being impossible to perform, then only suitable objects are included in the set. For example, the initial object for constructing a patch must be a contour that does not intersect itself. A single curve is selected as the initial object for the contour. The rest of the contour must consist of a chain of tangent curves. If any of the curves in the chain intersect the previously selected object, they will be ignored. The resulting set will include only curves that do not form intersections. This ensures that the reference object for the operation is correctly defined.

A set is not created in the following cases:

•If the selection consists only of segments of a multi-segment curve, the curve itself is added to the log, not a set of its segments.

•If the selected objects cannot be combined into a set, for example, due to limitations of the current operation, then each object is considered to be selected independently. A list of these objects is added to the log.
