A BOM item may contain information about:

graphic items of the assembly drawing that make up its image,

and (or)

corresponding component of a three–dimensional assembly.

This information is called the geometry of the BOM item.

For example, the geometry of the "Shaft" BOM item can be segments, hatches and other elements depicting the shaft in the assembly drawing, as well as the Shaft part from a three–dimensional assembly.

Not all BOM items may contain the geometry; it’s only those items the information on which was transmitted to the BOM from the linked document. Only items of the same document can be the geometry of BOM items. Items geometry can be managed during editing a document connected to the BOM (see section Connecting and editing the BOM item geometry). Automatic inclusion of items in the geometry of the BOM item is possible.

You can enable the mode for displaying the geometry of the BOM items (see section Viewing geometry of BOM items). In this mode, the system automatically selects the geometry related to the selected BOM item in the drawing or assembly (provided that the drawing or assembly is open). As you navigate through the BOM (for example, using the arrow keys), images corresponding to the items of the BOM are highlighted in the graphic area of the drawing or assembly.

This mode can be very convenient when working with assemblies containing more than a dozen components. It allows you to quickly find an image of any BOM item (assembly unit, part, standard item, etc.) on an assembly drawing or in a model.

The inclusion of all graphic objects that make up its image, in the BOM item geometry is not strictly mandatory. However, we strongly recommend to include the positional leader in the object’s geometry.

Due to the inclusion of a positional leader in the graphical structure of the BOM item, some functions of associating a BOM with an assembly or a drawing can be executed; e.g., matching the reference number in the drawing/assembly with the reference number in the BOM and automatic calculation of zones.

If reference numbers are changed in the BOM, for example, as a result of adding reserved text lines in sections, the new lead numbers will be transferred to the landings of positional leader lines in the drawing or model. This transfer will take place automatically when the BOM is saved.

If in the BOM zone calculation is enabled, if the positions of positional leader lines in the drawing change (for example, as a result of changing the scale of the image or the format of the drawing), then new zone designations, indicating where each position is located, will be transferred to the BOM. This transfer will take place automatically when the drawing is saved.
