Variables can be edited on the Variables toolbar. While editing, you can change the following parameters of variables:

variable name — only for user-defined variables; the new variable name automatically replaces the old one in all expressions using this variable,

method of assigning a value to a variable — for user variables, graphic document sizes and sketches variables, and model operation parameters (including Exclude from calculation and Fix component parameters);

comment for the variable — for all document variables.

If the variable is assigned the status "informational", you can only edit the comment for it. The exception is made up of informational user variables. For these variables, the change of method for assigning a value remains available.

To set and change a method for assigning a value the cell Expression is used by the variable.

When changing the values of model variables, keep the following in mind.

Different parameters of operations have different ranges of values. For example, the value of the variable corresponding to the parameter Angle (this parameter is used by elements of rotation, extrusion, and others) cannot be less than zero and greater than three hundred sixty. Sometimes it happens that parameters with different value ranges are assigned the same variable. Subsequently, this variable may be assigned a value that falls outside the range established for one of the parameters. In this case, an error occurs in the model.

The variables of parameters Exclude from calculation and Fix component can have a value of either 0 or 1. If you enter any number other than zero into the cell , the expression constant, reference to a variable with non-zero value, or the expression whose calculation result is a number different from zero, then the variable gets the value 1. If the result of calculation, the value obtained by reference, or the entered number equals zero, then the variable gets the value 0.
If an expression, a reference to a variable, or a constant (not a number) is entered in cell Expression , then arbitrary control over the object's state (exclusion from calculation or fixation) is impossible — the state change commands are not available.

For variables of dimensions in graphic documents and sketches and variables of a model, there are advanced editing options.

While working with a graphic document or a sketch, to edit a variable of dimensions, you can use the set dimension value dialog, which appears after double-clicking on its dimension text. The dialog allows you to change not only the way a variable is assigned a value and its comment, but also the variable's name.

If the variable is informational, i.e., corresponds to the informational dimension, then in the dialog for setting the dimension value, only its name and comment can be changed (changing the assignment method is not available).

When working with the model, you can change the way of assigning the value to the operation parameter variable by changing the value of the corresponding numerical parameter in the Parameters Panel field. Ways of setting values in the Parameter Toolbar fields are described in the sections General Information and Notes on Setting Numeric Parameters of the Operation in the Fields of the Parameter Panel.

If the parameter value is expressed in linear or angular quantities, then to edit the variable you can also use set dimension value dialog, which appears after double-clicking the dimension text of the operation dimension corresponding to the required parameter. The dialog allows you to change the method of assigning a variable's value and its comment.

Moreover, this dialog is used to edit dimension variables — design elements manually inserted. For these variables, change of the name and the comment is available in the dialog.

You can change the sketch dimension variable while editing a 3D object that uses this sketch. To do this, start editing the object. In the graphic area, the dimensions of the used sketch will be displayed. Invoke the dialog to set the required size by double-clicking on its dimension label and perform the necessary actions to change the variable. In the dialog, you can change the variable name, the method of setting its value, and add comments to it.
