You can extend the curve beyond its end points. As a result of the extension, an elongated copy of the curve will be created. You can use open curves for the extension:

spatial curve,

curve on surface,

edge of a solid or surface,

contour in space,

a sketch containing one contour,

a chain of the above mentioned objects in any combination (objects are specified in their junction order; the end objects of the chain are extended).

The curve can be extended in one direction and in two directions simultaneously. The extension segment may be defined by the law of the source curve, and it can be a line segment or a circular arc.

The initial curve (except for an edge) is automatically hidden after extension.

Extension of a curve is performed by the Curves Extension command.

Step-by-step instructions

1.Specify the curve for extension in the graphic area or in the Design Tree. The name of the selected object is displayed in the Curve field. A phantom of the original curve with an extended segment will appear in the graphic area. By default, the curve is extended in one direction. The direction of extension (from the start or end of the curve) is automatically defined by the system.

2.Select method of defining length of extension: Extension length or Total length. By default, the toggle switch controlling the method of specifying the extension length is in position Extension length. It means that you need to specify the length by which the curve will be extended.

If you need to set the length of the curve resulting from the extension, set the toggle switch to position Total Length.

3.Enter the length value in the Length field on the Parameter Panel.
The extension length can be defined with a negative value (the switch Extension Length/Total Length is in the Extension Length position). In this case, the created curve will be truncated to the specified value.

4.If you need to extend a curve lying on a surface such that the added segment lies on the same surface, enable the "Along Surface option.

The option Along Surface is present on the Parameter Panel if an extension is specified by curve on surface (except intersection curve) .

5.Set the curve extension type using the buttons in the Extension Type group:

Same curve/spline,

By tangent,

By Circular Arc.

More details on types of curve extensions...

6.If you need to extend a curve in two directions at once to the same length and with the same extension type, set the switch Symmetrically to the on position (I).

If the switch Extension Length/Overall Length is set to Extension Length, the extension length value in one direction will be half of the value specified in the Length field.

If the switch Extension Length/Total Length is set to Total Length, then the extension length value in each direction will be equal to half the difference between the lengths of the original curve and the curve that should result from the extension.

7.If you need to extend the curve in the second direction with parameters different from the parameters of the first direction, set the Second Length switch to the on position (I). The controls for specifying extension parameters will appear in the Parameter Panel. Set the curve extension type in the Extension Type group, and the extension length in the Length field.
The Second Length toggle is present on the Parameters Panel if the toggle controlling the method of length specification is set to Extension length, and the Symmetrically toggle is in the off position (0).

8.If it is required to change the extension parameters between directions, click Change Direction button to the right of the Curve field.

9.You cat set the name, color and display parameters of extended curve. To do that, use the Properties section.

10.To complete the operation, click Create object .

11.The Curve Extension object will be displayed in the graphic area, and in the Design tree the icon of extended curve.

12.To complete operation of the command, click Finish .

An arc of a circle or an arc of an ellipse can be extended to obtain a complete curve if the Same Curve extension type is selected (for a circular arc, also By Circular Arc). When closing a curve at one of the ends of the extended arc, corresponding icons are displayed .

Tips

The extension length can be set in the graphic area using defining points (see section Defining Points of Objects) or using the geometrical calculator.
