If a KOMPAS–3D document is attached to the BOM item (see section Attaching a document to BOM item), the data from this document will be transferred to the textual part of the BOM item. This eliminates the need for manual data entry in some columns of the item and thereby reduces the chance of typos. For example, the property values of a drawing attached to an item can be automatically transferred to the columns of the specification Format, Designation, and Name, as well as the additional column Mass.

After editing and saving this data in the attached document, they will be transferred again to the BOM item. Thus, due to the link between the BOM item and the document, the text part of the item is entered and the correspondence between the properties of the connected document (for example, the part drawing) and the text part of the BOM object is automatically maintained.

Data transfer from the attached document to the BOM item is performed if the columns filling by reading data from the title block was enabled during Configuring BOM style Columns filling in the section by reading data from the title block is enabled.

If the BOM item contains a positional leader (see section Connecting and editing the BOM item geometryThe zone designation in which the reference number is located will be automatically transferred to the Zone column (provided that zone calculation is enabled in the specification settings).

If, as a result of editing the assembly drawing, the position of positional leaders being part of BOM items geometry has changed, then new designations of the zones containing reference numbers will be transferred to the Zone column.

We recommend using semi–automatic data entry into the text part of the BOM items wherever possible. This will avoid many errors in the BOM generation.

Notes on working with the graph Note

If a document is connected document, the BOM items are formed automatically based on the properties of the product constituent parts. The column Note is filled with the value of the corresponding property of the constituent part (if this value is specified). In addition, the following additional features are implemented for this graph:

In the case when the cell of the column Format or Zone contains more than two characters, the content of this cell is automatically transferred to the cell of the column Note. In the cell of column Format or Zone, the symbols *); are displayed. These symbols also precede the text transferred to the column Note.

If the text of both columns is moved, then for the text from the column Zone symbols *1) are used.

If the column Note contains the value of the property Note of the composite part, then the transferred texts are placed after it.

A user may supplement the content of the Note field with arbitrary text, placing it either before and/or after the existing text. For this, the commands Add text to the beginning of a note... and Add text at the end of the note... in the context menu are used in the mode of editing the BOM item. After invoking any of these commands, a dialog for entering the relevant text will be displayed.

To delete arbitrary text at the beginning/end of a note, you should run the add text command again and clear the input field in the popup dialog.

The text in each cell of the Note column can be automatically split into lines. This depends on the state of the option Automatically split the text into lines in the Note column in the section BOM of the current BOM settings dialog.

If splitting is enabled, then it will occur in such a way that the following elements are located in separate lines (in the listed order):

custom text at the beginning of the note,

value of the Note component part,

text moved from the Format,

text moved from the column Zone,

custom text at the end of the note.

The automatic splitting does not exclude manual splitting: if required, you can additionally split each of the elements into lines.

In addition to the items obtained from the connected document, the BOM may contain manually created items. If no documents are attached to the BOM, then all items in it are created manually.

When working with such BOM items, the commands Add text at the beginning/end of note... are unavailable. Text of the column Note is entered and edited directly in it.

Automatic transfer of texts from columns Format and Zone to column Note for manually created objects is not provided. If necessary, text can be moved from these and other columns with automatic addition of symbols *) and *1) using the Move to last column command from the context menu.

The option Automatically split the text into lines in the Note column of the current specification settings dialog applies only if the Note column contains not only the remark itself, but also text transferred from other columns. In this case, the first line contains a note, and the next lines contain texts transferred from other columns.
