Building spirals

Scroll

In KOMPAS-3D it is possible to build:

Cylindrical spiral,

Conical spiral.

To create a spiral, you should specify its position in space and the construction parameters. The position of the spiral is determined by the position of its base point and the orientation of the coordinate axes with the origin at this point. When building, the base point with the coordinate system is displayed in the graphic as Placement element . The base plane when constructing a spiral is the XY plane. The Z axis determines the direction of spiral building.

The spiral building commands are combined in a group. While executing a group command, you can switch to execution of another one using buttons of the Parameter toolbar header. You can also transfer any parameters you’ve specified between the commands of a group.

Cylindrical spiral

To build a cylindrical spiral, use the Cylindrical spiral command.

Step-by-step instructions

1.Assign the position of the base point in the Position group and the axis orientation of the spiral in the Orientation group of the Main section of the Parameter panel.
These actions are similar to the positioning of the LCS in the model and are described in sections LCS position and LCS orientation.

Immediately after invoking the command, a phantom of the spiral along with a Placement element is displayed in the graphic area. The placement element allows to change position of an object arbitrarily — in the graphic area with the mouse.

The position of the spiral can also be defined by specifying in the graphic area or in the Design tree an object — a flat face/plane or a circle/ circular arc.

If a flat face/plane is specified, then the base point is built at the location indicated by the object. In the field Base point, the method for building the point is displayed — Point on surface. The Z axis is perpendicular to the specified face/plane.

If an edge, a curve of a sketch, or a 3D curve in the form of a circle/arc is specified, then the base point is built at the center of the circle. In the Base point field, the building method of the point is displayed as Point in center. The Z axis is oriented perpendicular to the plane of the circle/arc. Moreover, the diameter of the spiral is assigned equal to the diameter of the circle/arc in this case.

To assign the parameters for building a spiral, you use the controls in the Spiral section.

2.Specify the diameter of a spiral.

3.Select the spiral building method using the group of elements Design method and set the corresponding parameters. The following methods are available.

By number of revolutions and height;

By step and height;

By number of revolutions and step.

4.Select the twist direction of the spiral — Left/Right, by setting the same-name on-off switch to the corresponding position.

5.Set the rotation angle of the spiral around the Z axis.
Enter the angle value in the Starting angle field or pick up the value from the drop-down list.
The angle value is counted from the X axis.

6.To complete creating the spiral, click the Create object .
The spiral will be displayed in the graphic area; its icon will be displayed in the Design tree . If a spiral has been created with an axis, it is displayed in the Tree as a subordinate object of the spiral.

7.To complete the command, click Finish button.

Conical spiral

To plot a conical spiral, use the Conical spiral command.

Step-by-step instructions

1.Specify the position of the source point in the Position group and the orientation of the spiral axes in the Orientation group of the Main section of the Parameter panel.
These actions are similar to the setting of the LCS position in the model and are described in sections LCS position and LCS orientation.

Immediately after invoking the command, a phantom of the spiral along with the Placement element is displayed in the graphic area. Placement element allows  to change position of an object arbitrarily — in the graphic area using the mouse.

The position of the spiral can be specified by specifying the object in the graphic area or in the Design tree — a flat face/plane or a circle/arc.

If a flat face/plane is specified, then the base point is built at the location of the specified object. In the field Base point displays the method of building a point — Point on surface. The Z axis is oriented perpendicular to the specified face/plane.

If an edge, a sketch curve, or a 3D curve in the shape of a circle/arc is indicated, then the base point is built at the center of the circle. In the field Base point, the method to add a point is displayed — At the center. The Z axis is directed perpendicular to the plane of the circle/arc. Moreover, the starting diameter of the spiral is eatablished equal to the diameter of the circle/arc.

To set the spiral building parameters, you use controls located in the Spiral section.

2.Specify the starting diameter of a spiral in the field Diameter 1.

3.Select the method to determine the final diameter of the spiral by pressing the corresponding button in the Method group, and specify the required parameters:

By diameter value — specify the diameter value similarly to the starting diameter, the value of the diameter is displayed in the field Diameter 2.

By generatrix angle — the final diameter is calculated using the values of the starting diameter and the slope angle of the generatrix conical spiral.
Establish the Generatrix angle to the axis of the spiral in the field. Depending on the slope angle of the generatrix, the diameter will be decreasing or increasing along the direction of the spiral axis.
To change the slope of the generatrix, press the Change direction button to the right of the Generatrix angle field.

4.Select the spiral building method using the controls in the Design method and establish the corresponding parameters. The following methods are available.

By number of revolutions and height;

By step and height;

By number of revolutions and step.

5.Select the twist direction — Left/Right, by setting the same-name on-off switch to the corresponding position.

6.Set the rotation angle of the spiral around the Z axis.
Enter the value of the angle in the field Starting angle or pick it up from the drop-down list in the field on the right.
The angle is counted from the X axis.

7.To complete creation of the spiral, click the Create object .
The spiral will be displayed in the graphic area; its icon will be displayed in the Design tree . If the spiral has been created with axis, it is displayed in the Tree as a subordinate object of the spiral.

8.To complete operation of the command, click Finish button.

Tips

It is possible to use the characteristic points to specify the numeric values of the spiral parameters (see Defining points of objects).

It is available to use the geometrical calculator.

It's  assign tolerances to the values of the operation parameters expressed in linear and angular values. To do this, call the Tolerance command located in the menu of the required parameter, or click on the icon displayed in the parameter field (the icon is displayed if a tolerance is assigned to the parameter value). More details on assigning tolerance...
