General information. Controlling and informational dimensions in the model |
Scroll |
KOMPAS-3D allows the creation of various dimension options in three-dimensional models.
Dimensions in the model can be of two types: controlling and informational. The dimension type determines whether the dimension affects the model object, or, on the contrary, an object affects the dimension.
Controlling dimension — a dimension which controls the geometry of the model object. The value of the controlling dimension can be changed. After that, the object with this dimension is reconfigured according to the new dimension value. The attribute of a controlling dimension is the rectangular frame around its value. This frame will not be printed.
Info Dimension — a dimension controlled by the model object. The value of informational dimension can’t be changed. If an object labeled with an informational dimension is rebuilt, then the dimension value is recalculated.
While working with the model, you can use dimensions of sketches and operations.
The dimensions of sketches are labeled manually when working with sketches. They can be both controlling and informational.
The dimensions of operations are created automatically in the process of Operations execution. Most of them are controlling. In some cases, such as for array instances, informational dimensions of an operation can be created. The type of operation dimension (controlling or informational) is determined by the system.
The dimensions of sketches and operations are displayed in the graphic area of a model during the creation/editing of an operation and in the mode of displaying dimensions of the selected element, and the dimensions of sketches also in Sketch mode. These dimensions are not shown in the Design Tree and are not transferred into the drawing.

The dimensions of sketches and operations can be presented as formatting elements — derivative dimensions. Derivative dimensions are permanently displayed in the graphic area and can be transferred into the drawing. They inherit the type of respective dimensions of sketches and operations. In the Design Tree, the derivative dimension is shown as a subordinate object of the sketch or operation.

Among the formatting elements are also dimensions manually labeled for model objects. In a model, you can also manually label the following dimensions:
All dimensions labeled manually are informational. In the Design Tree, such dimensions are displayed as independent model objects. If an object for which the dimension was labeled is changed, then the value of dimension will also change.

The parameters for rendering derivative dimensions and manually labeled dimensions are identical (for example, the length and angle of an arrow, the font and position of dimension text, etc.). They follow the dimensions settings of the model. The difference lies only in the color used to display the dimensions: by default, derivative dimensions are violet, while manually labeled dimensions are brown. The display color of model objects is set in the Object Properties dialog. |
The dimensions available in a model are located in the different planes. As the model is rotated, the dimensions also rotate. At the same time, the dimension label is displayed so that its text can be read from left to right.
In KOMPAS-3D, the default values for dimension parameters are set, which are most frequently used in design documentation. If necessary, you can change these values. Setup of the parameters of dimensions for the current document is performed in the dialog invoked by the Settings — Parameters... — Current detail\/Current assembly — Dimensions command.
