Editing the component geometry in place

Scroll

Editing "in place" (in context) means editing the component in the tab of the model it belongs to. At the same time, all other components ("scenery") are visible in the graphic area, and commands for shifting and rotating the entire model, changing its scale, orientation, and display type are available.

"In place" mode is especially convenient for editing those objects of the component whose construction involved the "environment" (for example, an element extruded to the face of an adjacent

part, or an auxiliary axis going through the origins of another component). In other words, the component objects that were created in the context of the model containing the component are recommended to be edited in the context of the same model.

When editing "in place", changes are made directly to the component file (a part or a subassembly) – just as if that file was opened in a separate window.

Working in the context editing mode

To start editing a component in the context of the current model, select the needed component in the Design tree and invoke the Edit component in place command .

The system will switch to the context editing mode for the component. The color of the line of the edited component in the Design tree and the bookmark of the current document will become orange. The graphic area of the model will display the icon for the context editing mode . Objects of the current model will change color and become inaccessible for editing.

All building and editing commands in this mode apply only to the specified component. The remaining components of the model are not editable (they are served as the environment), but you can use them when executing commands (specify faces, edges, vertexes).

It is possible to change the color used to display the components that make up the setting, or disable color change for these components (see Edit section).

The methods of creating or editing a model in place, in the context of the model containing it, do not differ from the methods of creating or editing a model in a separate tab. When working with a model, you can, for example, perform shaping operations, build auxiliary elements, add components from files, create components in place, etc.

An additional feature is the use of environment during the building of elements. For example, you can extrude a conceptual mass to the face of another component, draw an axis through its vertexes, and create a sketch on the edge of a adjacent part. In this case, a connection is formed between the component being edited and the assembly containing it, and a Contextual link object appears in the Assembly tree. More details on contextual links...

The presence of contextual relations in a component must be considered when working with the component further, for example, when editing a component and setting matings on this component.

An object of the component can be used to build geometry in the assembly or its other components (with the creation of contextual links), as well as to set mates. When editing an object in place, the geometry created based on it, the Contextual Link objects, and the matings are marked with an error sign. This is related to the fact that they are located in the Design tree of the assembly below the object being edited. After editing  in place is completed, the error signs will disappear.

To complete editing the component in place, rerun the Edit component in place command, or switch off the button with the same name in the Quick access bar, or click the context editing mode icon in the model graphic area.

If the component is a part, assembly or a blank part inserted by an external tab, the screen prompts you to save the component file. You can confirm or cancel saving.

If the component is a local part or local blank part, the prompt to save the file does not appear, since this component is stored in the file of the model containing it.

After editing the component in place is completed, the system returns to the mode of working with the main model.

After making changes to the component, it is marked in the Design tree with the icon . This means that the model needs to be rebuilt.
