This section describes how to configure import settings for all available file formats except DXF and DWG (for DXF and DWG formats, see the Model Import Settings section).

You can configure import settings when importing a model into a separate file, as well as when importing objects into the current model.

The settings dialog box appears automatically after selecting the Open with Parameters... command from the Open button menu (if the menu is not available, it means that custom parameter settings are not available for this file format).

The set of dialog elements depends on the format of the file being imported.

The following settings are available:

•general settings;

•configuring text import (for proprietary file formats only);

•configuring property import (for JT files only).

If you need to import multiple models with identical parameters, save the settings to a configuration file. Configuration files are supported for proprietary formats, STEP, and JT.

Model Import Configurations

Set the desired parameters and click the Import button. The model import process will begin.

General settings (for all available file formats)

The general settings allow you to specify which model objects and parameters will be imported.

The dialog box contains two groups of options—Settings and Objects (for some formats, these options are located on the Data page).

The options in the Parameters group are used to enable or disable the import of certain parameters and attributes, such as color, mass, and density.

Whether imported surfaces are merged with each other depends on the setting of the Knit surfaces option.

For assembly models, you can choose how components are created: to save components to separate files, the Create component files option must be enabled. Otherwise, all components will be stored within the assembly model.

The options in the Objects group are used to define the set of objects to be imported: only objects of the types for which the options are enabled are transferred to the model.

The settings you have configured can be saved to the import configuration. When using this configuration, the options will be set according to what is specified in the configuration file.

Descriptions of the configuration options for different formats are provided in the following sections:

Configuring text import (for proprietary file formats)

When importing models in proprietary formats, text, symbols, and dimensions are converted into objects A design element without a history (see section Features of Importing Design Elements). Text included in the imported object can become part of the geometry of the resulting design element or be included as a separate text object. The desired option is selected when configuring the import settings.

The text import settings are located in the dialog on the Text page.

By default, the Import text as geometry option is enabled on this page. When enabled, all text elements are converted into a set of lines. The appearance of the text is preserved, but the text content and parameters cannot be modified.

To make the imported text editable, disable the option. The text will be imported with the parameters specified in the source file and will be available for editing.

When the Import text as geometry option is disabled, the following options are available on the dialog page:

•Match texts to system ones

Enable this option to replace the style of the imported text with the style defined in the part/assembly template. This will apply the font and paragraph settings specified for the style in the template to all text objects.

•Set character correspondence

•Enable this option to replace characters in the source document with special characters (KOMPAS-3D) during import.

When this option is enabled, the File field and the table where character mappings are set become available in the dialog.

You can save these mappings and use them when importing other documents of the same format. To do this, save the mapping table to a file.

To use a mapping file to import the current model, select that file. The cells in the Source File column will be populated with data from the file.

To use the mapping file to import the current model, select this file.

If you want the table to apply not only to the current import session but also to subsequent sessions, save the import configuration after selecting the file and use that configuration. You can save the configuration on the Data page.

The configuration stores the name of the selected mapping file, as well as the status of the options described above.

Configuring Property Import (for JT files)

When importing a JT file, the attributes stored in it are read.

The values of the predefined attributes SourseID, SourseName, SourseDescription, SourseAuthor, SourseOrganization, SourseMass, and SourseDensity are assigned to the Designation, Name, Comment, Author, Organization, Mass, and Density properties, respectively, while the values of the remaining attributes are assigned to user properties automatically created in the model.

If necessary, you can map the attributes of the imported file to the user-defined properties KOMPAS-3D. The settings for this configuration are located on the Properties page.

Procedure

1.Enable the option Set Properties Mapping. The File field and the mapping settings table will become available.
The table will display the mappings set for the predefined attributes. These mappings cannot be changed.

1.To define mappings for other, non-predefined attributes, add new rows to the table using one of the following methods:

•If you need to add rows for attributes present in the imported file, click the Read from a file. The cells in the JT column will be populated with attribute names.

•If you need to enter attribute names manually, add empty rows to the table using the Add button, and then enter the attribute names in the cells of the JT column.

If necessary, you can delete an added row. To do this, place the cursor in one of its cells and click the Delete button. Rows of predefined attributes cannot be deleted.

3.Specify the KOMPAS-3D properties that should correspond to the added attributes.
To set a property, click the icon in a cell of the KOMPAS column and select the desired property from the list.

KOMPAS-3D properties that are mapped to predefined attributes appear in the list alongside other properties and are available for selection.

You can map this property to the desired attribute. In this case, when importing the model, the predefined attribute will be ignored. The property will take on the value of the attribute to which it has been mapped by the user.

3.If you want to save the specified mappings, click the Save to File button next to the File field and enter a file name in the dialog box that appears. The created file will be automatically selected—its full name will appear in the File field.

3.To select a different mapping file, click the File field name and specify the desired file in the dialog box that appears. Attribute strings that are not predefined will be replaced with strings from the selected file.
The Default button on the right side of the File field allows you to opt out of using the mapping file. After clicking it, the field will be cleared, and only the rows will remain in the table of predefined attributes.

To ensure that the selected mapping file is applied not only during the current import session but also in subsequent sessions, save the import configuration after selecting the file and use that configuration. You can save the configuration on the Data page.
